JOHNSON, Ark. – The Wake Forest women's golf team advanced to the match play portion of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships after a strong third round Monday at the Blessings Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot 2-over, the second lowest round of the day, to climb the leaderboard to fifth place at 26-over.

The Demon Deacons are making their first appearance in the NCAA match play bracket since the format began in 2015.

Due to a one-hour weather delay during the afternoon, the third round of stroke play for several teams will be completed early on Tuesday morning. Following the completion of the third round, the match play quarterfinal matchups will be confirmed. Currently, the Demon Deacons would be the No. 5 seed and play the No. 4 seed, tournament host Arkansas, on Tuesday morning in a quarterfinal matchup. Quarterfinal matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. CT.

Wake Forest opened the day T-9th place, one shot out of the eighth and final match play spot. The Deacs were in seventh place at 31-over when thunderstorms halted play late in the afternoon. After the storm cleared, Wake Forest finished strong, posting six birdies and an eagle over their last three holes of the round to climb to fifth place by the end of the day.

"This golf course is very difficult and the more times you play it, the more comfortable you get on it," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "This is a very good team and you could see how they gained confidence as they learned the course. It showed today and they played like they have been playing all year long."

Texas, Duke and USC, who all have two holes to play on Tuesday morning, are currently the top three teams on the leaderboard at 6-over, 14-over and 17-over, respectively. Arkansas finished at 24-over, followed by the Deacs at 26-over, Arizona at 28-over and Stanford at 30-over. Auburn (38-over), who has three holes to play on Tuesday, currently has a three-shot lead over Illinois for the eighth and final spot.

Wake Forest was led on Monday by Jennifer Kupcho, who carded a 1-under 72 to finish the tournament at 7-over, currently T-22nd on the individual leaderboard. She birdied two of her last three holes to complete her first under par round of the tournament.

Siyun Liu also finished stroke play at 7-over after a final round even par 73. She was 3-over late in her round before a birdie on No. 8 (her 17th hole of the day) and holing out from the fairway for eagle on No. 9 to get back to par for the day. Emilia Migliaccio shot 1-over on Monday and Vanessa Knecht was 2-over to round out the scoring four for the Deacs.

The individual match pairings for the quarterfinal matches will be determined Tuesday morning, following the conclusion of stroke play. The winners of Tuesday morning's quarterfinals advance to the semifinals, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Golf Channel will have live coverage of both rounds, from 12-2:30 p.m. (quarterfinals) and 5-9 p.m. (semifinals).
