JOHNSON, Ark. – Wake Forest reached the championship match of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship on Wednesday before falling to Duke 3-2 at the Blessings Golf Course. The Demon Deacons finished the season as the NCAA Runner-Up, capping the best season in program history.

"Everything you work for all season is for this moment, playing the final match of the NCAA Championship," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "These young ladies worked so hard and fought to get to this point, I couldn't be more proud of them. They came together and made Wake Forest history this season. The future is extremely bright for our program and we know there is more history to be made soon."

In a back-and-forth final that saw the teams exchange the lead throughout, three of the matches went extra holes. In the last match on the course, with the score tied 2-2, Duke's Miranda Wang defeated Wake Forest freshman Letizia Bagnoli on the 20th hole to give the Blue Devils the national championship.

Duke put the first point on the board when Ana Belac posted a 5&3 win over Vanessa Knecht. At that point, the other four matches were all square, late in the match. Emilia Migliaccio evened the score with a 1UP victory, winning the final hole to clinch the match. On No. 18, she snuggled her approach close to the pin leaving her a short birdie putt and Duke's Gina Kim hit into the greenside bunker before conceding the hole.

The last three matches were all square through 18 holes and went to extra holes including Wake Forest's Siyun Liu and Virginia Elena Carta, Wake's Jennifer Kupcho and Jaravee Boonchant and Bagnoli and Wang. It was the first time in NCAA women's golf history that three matches went to extra holes.

Duke went ahead 2-1 as Boonchant defeated Kupcho in 19 holes. Liu tied the match at 2-2 with her victory, downing Duke's Virginia Elena Carta by posting a birdie on the 20th hole. The final match also went to the 20th hole, as Wang defeated Bagnoli to clinch the title for Duke.

This year's tournament marked the first time Wake Forest had reached match play at the NCAA Championship since the tournament adopted the format in 2015. The Demon Deacons defeated Arkansas 3-2 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday and Auburn 4.5-0.5 in the semifinals on Wednesday morning to reach the final. Migliaccio led Wake Forest in match play, winning her match in all three rounds.

The runner-up finish was Wake Forest's best finish at the NCAA Championship, eclipsing a third place finish in 1995 when the event was completely a stroke play tournament.
