MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- No. 23-ranked Wake Forest dropped its exhibition opener on the road to No. 11 West Virginia by a 2-1 score on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mountaineers scored late in the first half and early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead. Abby McNamara responded with a goal in the 73rd minute off an assist from Shayla Smart to cut the margin to 2-1, but the Demon Deacons were unable to find a late equalizer.
"I thought we started well. The first 30 minutes or so we were controlling the game and had a lot of possession," head coach Tony da Luz said. "A lot of the things we've been working on in preseason, we saw come out today. The attacking phase just wasn't that great and we weren't creating chances in the box, so I'm a little disappointed in that."
Wake Forest will host Florida in an exhibition on Saturday night before welcoming Temple to Winston-Salem for the regular-season opener on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m.
"We were pretty cohesive and played well together, which was definitely encouraging," da Luz added. "We played against a really good, athletic team, and we got a lot of players onto the field, so we're looking forward to building off of this."
