No. 23 Wake Forest Shuts Out App State, 2-0

8/25/2019 8:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Demon Deacons earned their second-straight shutout to open the 2019 season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 23 Wake Forest recorded its second-straight shutout to open the 2019 season, blanking App State by a 2-0 margin at Spry Stadium on Sunday night.

The Demon Deacons (2-0) received goals from Ashley Frank and Ryanne Brown en route to the victory, while Mac Carmichael made one save as she earned the shutout in her first career start.

"The defense snuffed out a lot of the half-chances and some of the breaks they got off turnovers," head coach Tony da Luz said. "We've been stressing team defending since day one and particularly in the last couple games. We want shutouts every game, it will be a big priority for us all season long."

In the 26th minute, Hayley Younginer dribbled through a trio of defenders before dishing the ball to a wide open Frank, who beat the keeper far post for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The Mountaineers (0-2) kept the deficit at one goal until late in the second half, when Brown took advantage of a Hulda Arnarsdottir pass and finished top shelf after a deflection to put the game away.

Wake Forest held a 15-2 advantage in shots and 4-1 margin in corner kicks.

Now, the Deacs turn their sights to Wednesday, when No. 13 Santa Clara comes to Spry Stadium for a 5 p.m. contest. The game will be the first for Wake Forest on the brand new ACC Network.

"We definitely want to make a statement about the ACC," da Luz added. "The ACC Network has made a big investment and Wake Forest has as well, so it's a chance for us to showcase Spry Stadium and showcase our program against a really good Santa Clara team."
