Estelle Laurier and Abby McNamara scored, while Mac Carmichael totaled eight saves.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off a late-game surge, knocking off No. 19 Santa Clara, 2-1, at Spry Stadium on Wednesday evening.
"It was incredible defensive grit. We were short-handed to begin with and as the game went on, some kids were hurting pretty bad," head coach Tony da Luz said. "It was just a grinder. They're a really good team and they're going to go a long ways, so this will be a great win for us down the road."
Keeper Mac Carmichael, making just her second career start, saved eight of the nine shots on goal she faced.
"Mac was really good," da Luz added. "She's in the right position every time, she held balls securely and was calm under pressure. I thought Vicky Krug was unbelievable too."
The Demon Deacons (3-0) jumped out to an early lead over the Broncos (1-2), with Estelle Laurier taking advantage of a turnover and blasting a shot into the upper corner, far post, in the 18th minute.
Abby McNamara doubled the lead to 2-0 with a set piece goal in the 65th minute. Sofia Rossi took a free kick and sent it to Hannah Betfort along the right sideline, who delivered a cross to the far post where McNamara headed it past the keeper.
Santa Clara got one of the goals back off a corner kick, with Alex Loera recording the finish to cut the deficit to 2-1. But Carmichael made five second-half saves, including several in the closing minutes, to preserve the win.
The game was the first on the brand new ACC Network for Wake Forest University.
Wake Forest is back in action on Sunday, traveling to Charlotte for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
