No. 8 Iowa Defeats No. 10 Wake in Overtime

ANN ARBOR, Michigan -- The No. 10 Wake Forest field hockey team fell to No. 8 Iowa, 2-1, on Friday afternoon in the season opener at the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge.
After jumping off to a one goal lead late in the first half, the Deacs (0-1) yielded two late goals to give the deciding 2-1 advantage to the Hawkeyes (1-0). Sophomore, Laia Vancells registered her fourth career goal off an assist from Meike Lanckohr for the Deacons at the 28:03 mark. Iowa answered with goals at the 52:24 and 66:50 mark.
Vancells, led off the Deacs with two total shots, both of which were on goal. A host of Deacons followed with one total shot. The Deacs and Hawkeyes were identical in goal with two saves each. The Hawkeyes held an 11-7 shot advantage and a 5-1 edge in penalty corners.
Up next, the Demon Deacons will continue competition against the Big Ten. Sunday, Sept. 1, the Deacs will take on Michigan at 11:30 a.m. in Ann Arbor, MI.
