DURHAM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened its 2019-20 season on Saturday with the first two rounds of the Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot rounds of 5-under and 10-under to finish the day in second place at 15-under.
Host Duke is the 36-hole leader at 21-under. The Deacs are in second at 15-under and Louisville is in third at 10-under as ACC teams hold the top three places.
"It was a nice start to the season," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We had great contributions from everyone. We threw out a 74 in round one and a 72 in round two, which shows the depth of our team."
Two Demon Deacons are in the individual top 10 after the opening day of the tournament. Parker Gillam is T-4th at 6-under after rounds of 72 and 66. He was at even par through 27 holes on the day before playing his final nine holes in 6-under, including an eagle-birdie-birdie finish to his day. Eric Bae is T-6th at 5-under after rounds of 68 and 71.
Freshman Mark Power, making his collegiate debut, is T-15th at 2-under after consecutive rounds of 71. Alex Fitzpatrick and Marco Steyn round out the lineup, both at even par through two rounds. Kengo Aoshima, playing as an individual, is T-15th at 2-under.
The final round of the Rod Myers Invitational will be played Sunday at the Duke University Golf Club.
