Deacs Open Season with Rod Myers Invitational Victory

DURHAM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team used a strong final round on Sunday to win the 2019 Rod Myers Invitational, its first event of the season. The Demon Deacons shot 7-under during the final round at the Duke University Golf Club to turn a six-stroke deficit at the start of the round into a three-stroke victory.
The Demon Deacons concluded the event at 22-under, the third-best 54-hole total in the tournament's 10-year history. Host Duke was second at 19-under and Louisville (6-under) was the only other team to finish under par.
"The guys went out today and played some very, very good golf," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We knew if we could get off to a good start we could have a shot, and we shot 10-under on the front to take the lead. We got to 12-under before getting to some challenging holes to finish, but we did just enough to bring home the victory. Great contribution from everyone this week when your worst finisher is T-21st. We saw a lot of good things from a very young team this weekend."
Four Demon Deacons finished the tournament in the individual top 10. Parker Gillam celebrated his 21st birthday on Sunday by shooting a final round 70 to end the tournament in fourth place at 8-under. Eric Bae shot a final round 71 to finish T-5th at 6-under. Alex Fitzpatrick, who shot the low round of the day for the Deacs with a 69, and Mark Power were T-9th at 3-under.
Marco Steyn rounded out the lineup with a 73 to finish T-21st at 1-over, while Kengo Aoshima, playing as an individual, shot 74 on Sunday to finish T-18th at even par for the event.
The victory was Wake Forest's fourth win at the Rod Myers Invitational over the last five years, also capturing the title in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Deacs have won in each of their last four trips to Durham, having not competed at the Rod Myers Invitational last year.
The Demon Deacons return to action Sept. 23-24 as they host the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational.
