Hulda Arnarsdottir tied the game up twice with a pair of goals, but USF scored in the 77th minute to pull in front for good.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest erased a pair of deficits in the second half, but No. 25 South Florida jumped in front for good in the 77th minute, 3-2, at Spry Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Hulda Arnarsdottir scored twice for the Demon Deacons (5-2-1) in the second half to tie the game both at 1-1 and 2-2, but the Bulls' (5-1-0) Evelyne Viens tallied a second-half brace of her own, putting USF ahead 2-1 and then for good, 3-2.
"We wasted 45 minutes in the first half," head coach Tony da Luz said. "We didn't show up at all to play. Against a good team like this, you can't show up to play half a game. It was a tough weekend with UNC and South Florida and it was a great test and a great challenge for us. It will prepare us for the ACC for sure, but I'm disappointed in our performance today."
After being out-shot 8-2 in the opening half, the Deacs had a 10-9 shots advantage in the second half.
The Bulls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a counter-attack off a Wake Forest corner. Viens led the break and dished it off to Katie Kitching, who scored to put USF ahead, 1-0.
Arnarsdottir scored her first goal in the 53rd minute. After a long ball from Sofia Rossi, Hayley Younginer sent in a cross to the top of the 18 where Arnarsdottir was there for the finish.
Viens had a tap-in goal in the 56th minute for USF, finishing from close range off a Sydny Nasello assist.
In the 67th minute, Younginer and Arnarsdottir connected again. Younginer recorded her second assist when she found Arnarsdottir open at the edge of the box, and her shot snuck inside the left post to make the score 2-2.
The Deacs had a pair of chances to take the lead, with Arnarsdottir narrowly missing her third goal and then Abby McNamara firing a shot off the bottom off the crossbar.
Then, Viens got the ball along the right side in the 77th minute and dribbled around a trio of Deacon defenders and finished inside the far post to put USF ahead for good.
"The second half we were a different team," da Luz said. "We created way more chances and were way more dangerous. We made some crucial mistakes for their two goals, but we had chances to win the game there at the end."
Meghan Kennedy made three saves in between the posts.
Wake Forest opens ACC play with three-straight home games, beginning with No. 5 Virginia on Friday at 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
