The Deacs received a potential game-tying penalty kick in the final 20 minutes, but the Dukes saved the shot attempt.

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Top-ranked Wake Forest suffered its first defeat of the season, falling on the road to James Madison, 1-0, on Tuesday night.

"I am disappointed of course with the result," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "JMU came into the game with a better mentality and wanted it more. The lack of attention to details and some poor individual performances hurt us tonight. That is on me and we will refocus and get better from it."

The Dukes (4-2-0) scored in the 52nd minute, as Manuel Ferriol put away a free kick from 19 yards.

James Madison received a PK in the 62nd minute, but Demon Deacon (5-1-0) keeper Andrew Pannenberg made the save to keep the deficit at one goal.

The Deacs earned a penalty in the 76th minute, bu this time JMU keeper T.J. Bush stopped Bruno Lapa's effort.

Bush made seven total saves to keep Wake Forest off the board. Pannenberg set a new career high with six saves of his own.

"It is hard to do what these men do day in and day out playing with a target on our backs and we saw that firsthand tonight," Muuss added. "Hats off to James Madison, they were the better team tonight."

Wake Forest is back at home on Saturday night, playing host to Syracuse at 7:30 p.m. on ACCNX.
