Justin McMaster scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute to lead the Deacs to the win.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 1 Wake Forest capped off Homecoming with a 1-0 victory over Syracuse at Spry Stadium on Saturday night.
The Demon Deacons (6-1-0, 2-0-0 ACC) received a 63rd-minute goal from Justin McMaster to bounce back from Tuesday's loss and defeat the Orange (2-2-3, 0-1-1).
"That was a tough road trip, so there wasn't a lot we could do but prepare our guys. We knew it was going to a hard-fought game," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We've had our troubles with Syracuse the last three years, so to get a win finally is a good feeling and it's a good momentum-booster for these guys."
After a scoreless opening half, McMaster put the Deacs on the board in the second half. Machop Chol beat a defender along the right edge of the box, firing a cross towards the middle where McMaster was waiting to beat the keeper for the game-winner.
The Deacs were out-shot 6-5 in the first half but held an 8-2 advantage in the second half.
Celebrating his 21st birthday, Andrew Pannenberg earned his fourth shutout between the posts, saving the only shot on goal he faced.
Wake Forest returns to the road on Tuesday, traveling to Davidson for a 7 p.m. game on ESPN+.
