The Deacs earned their fifth shutout of the year with the 1-0 win.
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- No. 7-ranked Wake Forest scored in the 78th minute to defeat Davidson, 1-0, at Alumni Field on Tuesday night.
The Demon Deacons (7-1) picked up their fifth shutout in eight games this year, with Andrew Pannenberg saving a pair of Wildcat (1-5-1) shots on goal.
A pair of freshmen started and finished off the late goal for Wake Forest. Rookie Omar Hernandez took a corner, and after a redirection from Alistair Johnston, fellow freshman Nico Benalcazar was there to put it away for his first collegiate goal.
"We're really happy to get the result on the road against a very disciplined and organized Davidson team," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "The boys stayed together and kept at it and found a way to win the game. It was a great team win. Now we have a ton of work to do to prepare for the current best attacking team in the country in Clemson."
The Deacs controlled the game with a 15-5 advantage in shots. That turned up a notch in the second half, when Wake Forest outshot Davidson, 10-2.
Wake Forest returns home this weekend for a top-10 showdown against No. 4 Clemson on ACCNX.
