The Demon Deacons tied the game in the 85th minute and won it less than two minutes into overtime.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 7 Wake Forest stormed back from a late deficit to take down No. 4 Clemson in overtime, 3-2, at Spry Stadium on Saturday night.
In front of a sold-out crowd of 4,126 fans, the Demon Deacons (8-1-0, 3-0-0 ACC) trailed by a goal with less than six minutes remaining. Justin McMaster netted the equalizer in the 85th minute and Aristotle Zarris put away a penalty kick less than 90 seconds into overtime for the game-winner.
"This is probably one of the proudest moments that I've had a coach with this group with the character they showed and the mentality they showed," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I thought we were a different team in the second half. We dodged some bullets, but we knew if we could somehow contain them, there would be opportunities in transition and we did that tonight."
The Tigers (8-1-0, 2-1-0) suffered their first defeat of the season despite receiving goals from Kimarni Smith and Oskar Agren.
After trailing 1-0 into halftime, Machop Chol and McMaster connected for the first time in the 50th minute. A McMaster header sent Chol behind the defense, and he pulled the keeper out of net before finishing inside the left post to knot the score at 1-1.
Clemson took the lead back in the 63rd minute, but Chol found McMaster for the equalizer in the 85th minute. Off a cross from Chol, McMaster snuck a shot inside the near post from close range to tie it up.
Early in the overtime period, Clemson keeper George Marks took down McMaster in the box and was shown a yellow. Zarris stepped up to the penalty spot and put it away to seal the victory for Wake Forest.
Andrew Pannenberg made five saves in between the posts to lead the Deacs defensively.
Coaching his 100th game at Wake Forest, Muuss improved to 81-12-7. That .845 winning percentage is best of any coach in ACC history through 100 games, surpassing the likes of Maryland's Doyle Royal (.820), UNC's Carlos Somoano (.760), Clemson's IM Ibrahim (.750) and Virginia's Bruce Arena (.700).
Wake Forest hits the road on Friday, traveling to Boston College for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ACCNX.
