GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team grabbed the lead at the Lady Paladin Invitational during the first day of play at the Furman University Golf Course. The Demon Deacons shot 2-under and were the only team to finish the day under par.
Wake Forest holds a six-shot lead over host Furman, who shot 4-over in the first round. North Florida and South Florida are tied for third at 5-over.
"We had a good start to the tournament in some very difficult conditions," said head coach Kim Lewellen. "It was only the first round, but we put ourselves in a good position. We need to continue to improve and play quality golf this weekend."
Senior Siyun Liu led the Deacs during the first round, shooting a 5-under 67 to hold the 18-hole lead in the individual leaderboard. She was one of just 10 players in the field under par on Friday and takes a two-shot lead into the second round.
Freshman Lauren Walsh also shot under par in the first round, going 4-under on her back nine to go from 2-over at the turn to 2-under at the end of the day. She is tied for third on the individual leaderboard.
Rachel Kuehn shot 2-over and Emilia Migliaccio was 3-over to complete the scoring four for the Demon Deacons. Letizia Bagnoli was 4-over to round out the Wake Forest lineup.
The Lady Paladin Invitational continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at the Furman University Golf Course.
