The Demon Deacons have started 3-0-0 for the fourth-straight season as Wake Forest outshot the Blazers 22-4 in the 3-0 victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- With two goals in the span of five minutes late in the first half, Alabama native David Wrona was the centerpiece of a powerful Wake Forest offense that pushed the Demon Deacons to a 3-0 victory over UAB on Saturday night.
Despite heavy rain for most of the evening, the wet conditions didn't slow Wake Forest's offense as the Demon Deacons logged 22 shots.
"I think it was gritty, it was gutty [but] it was not without a lot of mistakes," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "I told the guys at halftime, I gave them a little bit of the benefit of the doubt just how slick it was being wet and sloppy. ...But I thought our reactions to win the ball back and our counter-press was very good in the second half.
"Overall a really good team performance."
The performance marks the first time in Wrona's collegiate career that he has scored in back-to-back matches, as the sophomore also struck in Wake Forest's 4-1 victory over NC State last week.
He took a pass from freshman Colin Thomas for his first goal against the Blazers before doing it all on his own for his second tally just minutes later.
In the 65th minute, sophomore Calvin Harris added his second goal of the campaign as he sent a rocket from outside the 18-yard box past UAB goalkeeper Caelan Whitehead to extend the Wake Forest lead to 3-0.
Redshirt Junior Andrew Pannenberg and redshirt freshman Cole McNally combined for the clean sheet.
With a victory in the first meeting between the two schools since 1996, Wake Forest now leads the all-time series 3-0-0.
Wake Forest will now turn its attention back to conference play with a marquee matchup at Clemson on Tuesday night. The match will be televised on the ACC Network with a 6 p.m. start at Historic Riggs Field.
Entering the weekend, Wake Forest was ranked No. 1 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll while Clemson was No. 3.
