The Demon Deacons put eight shots on goal but Clemson's keeper stopped all eight.
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Wake Forest put eight shots on target, but No. 6 Clemson stopped all eight to defeat the Demon Deacons, 2-0, at Historic Riggs Field on Sunday evening.
The Deacs (1-4-1, 1-3-1 ACC) out-shot the Tigers (4-2-0, 3-2-0 ACC) by a 12-8 margin, but Clemson was able to find the back of the net twice.
"Our team did not perform at an ACC level in the first half," head coach Tony da Luz said. "We were sloppy with the ball and missed a clear chance before halftime. We came to life in the second half and created several chances and attacking corners. I'm proud of our second-half performance and we have to build on it for Notre Dame this Thursday."
The first score came on an own goal when a Deacon defender deflected a Clemson cross into the back of the net in the 15th minute. Mariana Speckmaier headed in a corner in the 35th minute to close out the scoring.
Seven different Deacs put shots on frame, but Clemson keeper Hensley Hancuff saved all eight shots on goal she faced to preserve the clean sheet.
Giovanna DeMarco led Wake Forest's offensive attack with three shots, including two on target.
In the 21st minute, Sofia Rossi sent a shot right underneath the crossbar, but Hancuff leaped and punched it out of danger at the last moment. The Deacs had a flurry in front of goal in the 42nd minute, with Carrie McIntire and DeMarco taking shots from close range, but Hancuff was again there for the stops.
Hannah Betfort and Shayla Smart earned chances in the 73rd and 76th minutes, respectively, but Hancuff made diving and leaping efforts to thwart each attempt.
Wake Forest returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m., traveling to Notre Dame for a game on ACCNX.
