Faircloth Scores Twice in Loss to Hokies

Virginia Tech edged Wake Forest at Spry Stadium, 4-3.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest dropped a back-and-forth game to Virginia Tech, 4-3, at Spry Stadium on Thursday night.

The Demon Deacons (2-5-1, 2-4-1 ACC) battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to take a 3-2 lead, but the Hokies (4-7-0, 3-4-0 ACC) scored twice in the final 13 minutes to pull back in front.

Sophie Faircloth scored twice in the second half to lead the Deacs offensively, and Wake Forest also received an own goal in the first half.

"It was just really inconsistent play from our team. The first 15 minutes, we had a great start and created some opportunities but we let them off the hook and let them into the game," head coach Tony da Luz said. "Then they worked harder than we did; out-hustled us. They were so much more hungry for the game than we were down the stretch in the second half. You can't give up four goals in an ACC game and win, we've already proven that. You also can't play inconsistently from an intensity standpoint and win a game in this league, at your home field. That's what I'm most disappointed with, is we're on our home field in beautiful Spry Stadium. We should have more pride than that and the fight wasn't there. All we can do is try to pick it up and get three points Sunday and see what happens."

Trailing 2-1 after Emily Gray scored two-and-a-half minutes into the second half, Faircloth broke through with back-to-back goals.

In the 67th minute, she snuck a free kick from 25 yards through the defense and past the keeper inside the far post for the equalizer.

At the 77:24 mark, Faircloth put away a rebound after Hannah Betfort had a shot saved to give Wake its first lead of the game.

But the Hokies equalized just 25 seconds later on an Allyson Brown goal, then took the lead in the 84th minute on Tori Powell's second goal of the game.

Wake Forest closes out the regular season against Pitt at 1 p.m. Sunday on ACCNX. The Deacs can still earn a spot in the ACC Championship with a win Sunday and a Virginia Tech loss against Boston College.
