In the Pro Humanitate spirit and consistent with Wake Athletics’ goal of providing a World Class Student-Athlete Experience, 99 percent of Wake Forest student-athletes are registered to vote in next month’s election.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Mission accomplished.
Demon Deacon student-athletes have put their words into action over the past several months and can now boast that 99% of Wake Forest's 400-plus student-athletes across all 18 varsity programs are registered to vote in either North Carolina or their home state. Additionally, Athletics staff is working to assist all international student-athletes to be able to vote in their home countries' future elections. Engagement outside of the classroom and playing fields is another testament to Wake Forest's goal of providing a World Class Student-Athlete Experience.
"Through education, encouragement and support from President Hatch, University leadership and our coaches and staff, Wake Forest student-athletes learn to understand their responsibility as tomorrow's leaders," Director of Athletics John Currie said. "For many this is their first opportunity to vote, our most fundamental civic duty. I would like to thank our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee leaders for taking on this extremely important initiative."
"Student-athlete leaders have been preparing for this day for a long time," Demon Deacon women's golfer and SAAC president Emilia Migliaccio said. "This began in June with planning for our summer registration event. Now it's time for student-athletes and all students to put their voices into action. We plan to participate in early voting between October 15-31 and appreciate Ashley Wechter, our head coaches, Wake Forest Athletics staff and our University leadership for supporting this initiative."
Wake Forest Athletics has embraced NCAA's decision to have no athletically-related activities on Election Day to ensure all student-athletes, coaches and staff have an opportunity to vote. Additionally Athletics staff is currently working with each of its programs to find early voting options.
Wake Forest Athletics partnered with The Forsyth County Board of Elections back on Aug. 17 for a voter registration event. This initiative is just one of the many SAAC and student-athletes and programs across campus are utilizing to advance social justice and equality for all.
