Opening Statement…
The bottom line is Wake Forest had more want to out there today, more enthusiasm and better coaching, everything they had in the course of the game they had it better than we did. I was not pleased with the way we played in the first half at all. There were 3 or 4 things we did in practice that we specifically said we were going to do a certain way and we failed to do that…. Danny and his staff did a nice job. I thought Childress did a great job running their club. White was 3-3 from the three point line in the first half. One of our keys to the game was to make him put the ball on the floor and he was still 3-3.
On the lack of want to and effort…
Guys I've been mad all year long. We got to play harder, we got to play smarter, we got to play harder, we got to play smarter. I thought that Wake Forest played with more purpose. They set the screen and roll and our guys jogs back and they throw in to the guy and he lays up. But that's my job I got to get them to play harder.
Wake Forest Head Coach Danny Manning
Opening Statement...
"I thought that the momentum that we created in the first half gave us a lot of energy and a lot of juice going into halftime. We shot the ball at a really high clip, made some tough shots, we shared the ball and there was great ball movement. In the second half not as much. We struggled from the field so to speak in terms of our shooting percentage and amount of makes. We had some looks that we didn't knock down. We knew North Carolina was going to make runs and we knew going into it we wanted to limit their fast break opportunities and their second chance opportunities. We didn't limit their second half opportunities enough and they had 17 offensive rebounds. That's who they are and what they've done for an extremely long time."
On hanging on to a second half lead...
"Absolutely. It's something we talked about and the guys were talking about it, and that was what they were talking about every timeout coming down the stretch of the game. Reminding each other of what we needed to do to get the outcome we want."
On the impact of ball movement on Wake's first half run...
"It's part of it, but when you shoot 51% from the field that's it too. We can have all the ball movement in the world but if you're not knocking down those shots it doesn't help other than kill time off the clock."
What does it mean to you to finally beat North Carolina...
"Exciting. We're always excited to win an ACC game. Whenever you play one of the Big Four schools you want to get that win as well. We're happy with the win and we want this to hopefully build some momentum for us as we close out our season. We feel like the energy for this game was great. I thought the students were really good. It got really loud for that chicken sandwich again. That's a good deal for us."
What did you think about your guys working in the interior?
"Our big guys don't get enough credit because every game that we've played recently we've gotten our opponents big guys in foul trouble. I think our guys do a good job of posting up and fighting for position, and teams are fouling them when they're doing that, and that's helping us get into the bonus and getting to the free-throw line. I thought our guys today did another really good job at that. I thought Ody hit a couple key free-throws down the stretch and got the ball inside, gathered himself, shot faked, went up strong and finished at the rim. Big presence for us. I thought Isaiah did a good job in our zone talking and Ish does what he does. He made a couple three's and you have to guard him when he goes out there. I thought all our guys, and Chaundee when he swings into the big spot, did good. We've been able to get him [Chaundee] more minutes and he's starting to play like the Chaundee that was playing before he got injured."
What did you think of Brandon Childress swinging the ball around and his play tonight...
"He's our floor leader. He's led us all year. He leads us in assists by a large margin and tonight he did a good job of distributing the ball. Against that pressure when they were double-teaming him and late in the game when they were trying to take the ball away from him, having only two turnovers and ten assists means he had an incredible floor game tonight."
Andrien White
On how good it feels to get a win...
"It feels really good, it feels really good. We were desperate for this one and really put in the preparation for this week to try to get this one. Everyone came in and contributed and did what they needed to do to get the win."
On what he liked best about the execution tonight...
"The focus was just locking in and executing and doing what the scout report and game plan was. Everybody did a really good job doing that so that's what really contributed to our win today; execution, locking in and focusing in on what we were trying to do and accomplish."
On what made the team so desperate for this win...
"Well, we need conference wins. Every game, we really want it. Coming down the stretch, we are going to need to run off some games. This is a good momentum boost for us to get going, get back to practice and get to Miami and get another one."
On the satisfaction of beating Carolina...
"That's one of the reasons I came here, to play programs that have high standards and have done really well in the past. It feels really good, I'm not going to downplay that. Hats off to them, they fought the whole game, even tried to make a run late."
On the feeling in the locker room after the win...
"It's great, we knew that that was a big win that we needed. We knew that it was a win we could get and it was a good win so we need to keep it going. We can't just set on this, have fun and celebrate tonight. Thursday we have practice and we have to get ready for Miami. It's the first step for us so we have to keep going."
On if there is a tendency to settle after a big win...
"We get too happy, like I said. We just have to buy in, in the second half. We have to buy in with everything and not just be satisfied with one win, but we have to come in the next day in practice. We can get too laid-back, too comfortable after one win but the still picked us 15th in the league, so we have to work."
On the satisfaction after the past two losses...
"It was a good win. We knew that those two games, being up by 12 at halftime vs Louisville and we had Syracuse in the bag, we had them. We settled too much and we weren't adhering to our principles. We weren't making good decisions on the opposite ends. We stayed calm and did better today."
Brandon Childress
On how the win feels…
"It's a great feeling. It's always a good feeling to get a win at home, especially against a great team like that. We're both going through our struggles this year together, but tonight we came out victorious. We got up early, we let them back in the lead, and that part is on me so we got to do a better job on that. But other than that, I'm proud of the way we played and executed, especially towards the end."
On really wanting this win…
"I was going do anything to win this game. I wasn't walking out of here with that bad taste, especially after how we lost that last game against Syracuse. So, by any means, I was going do whatever we had to do to win. Obviously, whether it was passing the ball, scoring the ball, rebounding, just whatever we had to do."
On the chip on his shoulder while guarding Cole Anthony…
"It's always my preparation. When I'm going out there on the court, regardless of who it is. Cole is obviously one of the top prospects going into the 2020 Draft. He's a heck of a player; it was a great opportunity to compete against someone like that, and obviously I did want to take that challenge."
