The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams had the program's best weekend of competition since John Hayes became head coach prior to the 2016-17 season. The Deacons sent a group of athletes to Ames, Ia. for the Iowa State Classic while another group traveled north to Liberty University for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
"Overall, this was a very good weekend," said Hayes. "I would say this was easily the best weekend since I've been at Wake Forest."
Overall, the Deacons hit 14 marks that will qualify those athletes for the ACC Championships scheduled for February 27-29 at Notre Dame.
"Our team gets that something very special is happening," said Hayes. "We're on the cusp of something very special. Our assistants are doing a great job of building up each area of the program and we're very excited about where we're going as a program. This weekend was a great start."
At Iowa State on Saturday, the Deacons had nine entries with six meeting ACC Championship qualifying marks. Johanna Schulz finished second in the women's mile in a season-best 4:41.24 while Amy Harding-Delooze was seventh in 4:44.52, also an ACC qualifier. Archie Wallis and Kenton Bachmann both met ACC standards in the men's 800 meters with Wallis turning in an indoor personal-best of 1:50.85 and Bachman hitting a personal-best of 1:51.45.
