WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest athletes claimed the top spot in four events on Friday on the opening day of the Camel City Invitational meet being held at the JDL Fast Track. In the process, a national record was broken by a Demon Deacon.
Robbie Grace won the long jump, Archie Wallis took the men's 800 meters, Amy Harding-Delooze won the women's mile and Elaina Roeder was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault.
"Overall it was a great start to the meet," said head coach John Hayes. "I think we set a good tone for this meet. What we're seeing is more consistent efforts and to be the team we want to be, we need to see that week in and week out."
In addition to the four event victories, Isabelle Dutranoit, a freshman from Smith, Bermuda, set the Bermuda national record in the 3,000 meters. Dutranoit was Wake Forest's top finisher in the event and posted a 9:50.80. breaking the previous Bermuda national record of 9:52.95 set by Ashley Berry in 2014.
"Izzy ran a fantastic race, she put herself in the mix right away and competed hard the entire time," said assistant coach Ashley Bastron. "She had her heart set on breaking the national record and it was really fun to watch that happen! I'm incredibly proud of her."
"She has really come in and worked very hard since day one," said Hayes. "I've been impressed with her work ethic and her attitude. She's just a great young lady."
Robbie Grace, a freshman from Bloomington, Minn., posted a 5.87 in the long jump (19'-3.25") in taking first place. Her mark was a personal best and an ACC qualifying distance.
"Robbie had a good performance. We knew this was coming and we know there's much more there too, in both the long and the triple jump" said Hayes. "I'm excited to see her continue to improve."
Aleeya Hutchins set a personal-best in taking second in the women's 800m. Hutchins ran a 2:09.31 in running an ACC Championship qualifying mark. It was the sixth-fastest 800m in the ACC this season.
"I think when we go to Iowa State (Feb. 14-15) Aleeya will really be able to open it up on a 320 yard track and I think she'll be able to take that time down another couple of seconds."
Archie Wallis won the men's 800m with an ACC qualifying mark of 1:50.89, the fastest time in the event by a Deacon this season.
"That's something we've been waiting for," said Hayes. "He is smooth and I think Archie is going to continue to improve a great deal. I think with the 800 runners, you're going to see those times start to drop over the next few weeks. That's typically what happens in the month of February. The 800 is an event that tends to start much slower than other events in regards to times."
The Demon Deacons placed three in the top five in the women's mile led by Amy Harding-Delooze who won the event with an ACC qualifying time of 4:45.83. Elise Wright was third in 4:49.86 while Hannah Brookover was fifth and Lily Harding Delooze took ninth.
Anna Bush competed in the women's 60m hurdles and won her heat in the prelims with an 8.79 clocking. She will be competing in the pentathlon during a multi-event meet on Tuesday at JDL Fast Track.
Tony Jones took second in the men's high jump, clearing 2.05m (6'-8.75) while Elaina Roeder was the top collegiate finisher in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.35m (10'11.75). Cydney Delley was sixth in the women's 200, Ethan Roach took third in the men's 60 and Evan Simmons was fourth in the men's 60m.
Saturday's action begins at 9:30 a.m. with the shot put. The two featured events of the day are the women's Elite Mile set for 2:20 and the men's Elite Mile at 3:25. The Deacons will have Johanna Schulz in the women's Elite and Zach Facioni in the men's Elite.
"Saturday is a big day for us," said Hayes. "We've got Ethan (Roach) in the 60m and Zach and Johanna in the Elite Mile. It should be a good day."
