WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest sophomore Zach Facioni set the school indoor track record for the mile on Saturday afternoon, turning in a 4:01.72 at the JDL Fast Track. Facioni was competing in the Camel City Elite Mile with current college athletes as well as former collegiate runners, past NCAA champions and Olympic medalists.
Facioni's time broke the previous school record of 4:02.71 set by Kyle Graves in 2015, also at the Camel City Elite. The three fastest men's mile times in the ACC this season were run on Saturday afternoon as Diego Zarate of Virginia Tech was the top ACC runner in the Elite Mile at 4:01.09 and the Hokies' Jack Joyce finished behind Facioni at 4:03.65.
"I'm really pleased with the way Zach ran today," said head coach John Hayes. "He put himself in a tough position early in the race but at the end, he felt good and started moving around some people. He ran a very solid race."
Facioni's time puts him close to qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships scheduled for Albuquerque, N.M. on March 13-14. The Sydney, Australia native has earned three All-ACC honors thus far in his career.
The Demon Deacons did not post any individual wins on Saturday but Robbie Grace finished third among collegians in the women's triple jump at 11.28 meters. Johanna Schulz posted a 4:49.72 in the women's Elite Mile and Ethan Roach clocked a 6.97 in the men's 60m.
