Deacs Fall at NC State in Regular Season Finale

3/6/2020 8:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball

RALEIGH, N.C.- Wake Forest concluded the regular season on Friday with a 84-64 loss at NC State at PNC Arena.

Brandon Childress scored 19 points to lead the Demon Deacons while Olivier Sarr added 14 points. Jahcobi Neath scored 12 points for his fourth double-figure game (all in the last five games) to go with a team-high five assists. Chaundee Brown had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sarr got off to a quick start, scoring the Deacs' first six points and eight of their first 11 as Wake took an early 11-7 lead. A 10-0 run by State gave the Wolfpack a 20-13 lead with 12:45 to play in the half before a 12-0 run pushed the lead to 34-17 with 7:30 left in the half. The Pack led by as many as 18 before taking a 44-31 lead into the break. Childress (13 pts) and Sarr (10 pts) combined for 23 of the Deacs' 31 first-half points.

In the second half, NC State extended the lead to 56-37 with 13:30 to go and held that 19-point advantage at the midway point of the half. Wake used a 9-0 run to close the margin to 62-52 with 7:30 to play. However, the Pack answered with a 7-0 lead to extend the lead back to 17 and eventually closed out the 84-64 victory.

NOTEWORTHY
  • Brandon Childress scored in double figures for the seventh straight game and the 24th time this season
  • Olivier Sarr had his 22nd double-figure game of the season
  • Wake Forest's three free throws and seven free throw attempts were both season lows
QUOTABLE
"NC State came out and we let them get comfortable early on," head coach Danny Manning said. "When they got comfortable they started scoring at all three levels and we didn't take anything away and that put us in a tough spot. We were battling for a little bit and then they went on that 10-0 run and that really hurt us and we were playing catch up from there. We have to do a better jobs in games like this of getting to the free throw line."

UP NEXT
Wake Forest will travel to Greensboro next week for the ACC Tournament, held March 10-14 at the Greensboro Coliseum. The bracket will be released on Saturday night after the conclusion of regular season conference play.
