HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – The Wake Forest women's golf team is taking home the team title while junior Emilia Migliaccio is taking home the individual title at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Demon Deacons won the event by an astonishing 26 strokes.
The Deacons had their best showing on the final day, shooting a field-best 280 on the final 18 holes after carding a 287 and 288 in the first and second rounds, respectively. The culmination came from all five Deacs in the field, as each player finished inside the top 25 and three inside the top five.
Migliaccio took the title by one shot, sealing the deal with a bogey-free final nine holes. After a rocky second day, freshman Rachel Kuehn bounced back with her best round of the event that helped her finish T3. She birdied three of her last five holes to secure her spot. Senior Siyun Liu also found herself at the top, finishing in fifth place, just two strokes off Kuehn.
Freshman Lauren Walsh had the best day of the bunch, starting off with an eagle on the second hole. She rode that momentum all day, shooting up 35 spots on the leaderboard to finish T10 and -3 on the day. She also shot a bogey-free final nine holes. Sophomore Vanessa Knecht rounded out the team, moving up two spots to finish T20 and just one stroke behind Walsh.
From the Coach
"To win that event with the level of competition that was there, having four players inside the top 10, Emilia winning the individual title, and having everyone in the top 20, is probably the most impressive showing I've had in my coaching career. These young ladies show enthusiasm for the sport and kindness toward one another. When they really come together great things can happen! I'm looking forward to watching them compete again in a few days!" – Head Coach Kim Lewellen
