
Four Demon Deacons Receive ACC Postgraduate Scholarships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –Four Wake Forest student-athletes are among the 50 recipients of the ACC's 2020 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Award. Women's soccer's Madison Hammond, men's soccer's Alistair Johnston, track & field's Elijah Shalaway and women's golf's Siyun Liu have been selected from Wake Forest.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $6,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. Liu was one of eight student-athletes who plan to pursue professional careers in their chosen sports and were named as honorary recipients.
A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Hammond will graduate this spring with a degree in English. A four-year starter and two-year captain, she helped the Wake Forest women's soccer team make two NCAA Tournament appearances, including the third round in 2018. Hammond earned 2nd team All-ACC honors as a senior and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. She finished her career with four goals and six assists, including three goals and three assists as a senior.
A team captain, Johnston led the Demon Deacons to the 2019 NCAA College Cup as a senior. The economics major started 22 games, and totaled 11 points on three goals and five assists, primarily from the right back position. He earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and was also named All-ACC, All-Region and to the All-ACC Academic Team. Following the season, he was a first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft by Nashville SC, selected No. 11 overall.
Javelin athlete Elijah Shalaway, a native of Barto, Pa., has earned All-ACC honors both in the classroom and on the track. He is a two-time All-ACC Academic honoree while earning first team All-ACC recognition in the javelin with his third place finish at the ACC Championship in 2017. Shalaway, an English major, was a second team All-ACC pick in 2018. His career-best throw of 66.41 meters (217'10") is the third-longest throw in Wake Forest history.
A senior finance major from Shanghai, China, Liu played in the lineup for all seven events in the shortened 2019-20 season, finishing with a 71.95 stroke average. She finished inside the top 25 in six events with her best coming at the Lady Paladin Invitational where she tied for second and finished inside the top five on three other occasions. A WGCA All-American Scholar, Academic All-ACC selection, and All-ACC selection, Liu has 11 top-10 finishes in her Wake Forest career and could return to the Deacs for the 2020-21 season as a graduate student.
The annual ACC Postgraduate Scholarship Luncheon to honor the recipients was cancelled this season, but the honorees have been recognized this week on the conference's social media channels.
