OMAHA, Neb. – Jack McGinley continued his postseason pitching dominance, allowing Colgate just four hits as Wake Forest opened the College World Series with a 1-0 win over the Red Raiders at Omaha's Municipal Stadium.

Colgate's Larry Bossidy was equally impressive, holding the Demon Deacons to just two hits but one of them was an eighth inning single by Luke McKeel which accounted for the only run of the game.Wake Forest vs. Colgate

"It took perfect defensive play and good pitching to win today and we got both," said head coach Taylor Sanford to Mac McDuffie of the Raleigh News and Observer following the game.

"McGinley pitched us to Omaha and now he has us off on the right foot toward the national title," said Sanford to Wake Forest SID Bill Hensley in the Charlotte Observer.

McGinley gave the Deacons a dominant start for the third straight NCAA series.  After beating West Virginia 5-1 in the District 3 semifinal and Rollins 4-0 in the opening game of the district championship series, McGinley and Bossidy engaged in a true pitcher's duel.  In his three postseason starts, McGinley has allowed just one run and 19 hits in 27 innings.  In subduing Colgate, McGinley walked two and struck out four while not allowing a runner past second base.

Wake Forest first baseman Bob Waggoner of Salisbury came into the CWS hitting just .129 but he worked Bossidy to a 3-2 count to open the eighth inning before drawing a walk.  McGinley laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Waggoner to second.  Lead-off hitter Harold Moore flied out to left before McKeel looped a single over second base which fell in front of Colgate center fielder Frank Nardullie.  That would prove to be the lone run of the contest.

"Bossidy pitched a terrific game," said Sanford.  "He held us to two hits and nobody had done that all season.    The contest also marked the first time all year that the Deacons failed to score at least two runs.

Defensively, the Deacons were led by Moore, from Smithfield, and third baseman Bill Barnes from Landis, who each turned in brilliant defensive plays.

The game was halted following the conclusion of the fifth inning when rain and hail suddenly engulfed the ballpark.  The delay was an hour and 18 minutes before the teams returned to action.

With the Deacons at bat in the top of the sixth after play resumed, catcher Linwood Holt spoiled Bossidy's bid for a no-hitter with a line drive over short.  But Colgate erased Holt when Tommy Cole grounded into a double play.

Wake Forest will meet Colorado State (now known as Northern Colorado) in the second round.  It is expected that Lefty Davis will fly to Omaha for the game, leaving his summer school classes behind for a day.

NOTES
  • Duke's Ace Parker had warned Sanford to expect hot weather in Omaha.  Duke had played in Omaha in 1952 and 1953 and experienced nothing but 100 degree weather.  The Deacons packed only light clothing and were shocked when today's high topped out at 60 degrees.
  • The Wake Forest team will visit Boys Town before the game with Northern Colorado.
  • The CWS is using Major League umpires to officiate the games.
  • Among the MLB scouts in attendance were Baltimore Orioles manager Paul Richards, Branch Rickey, Jr. of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Roy Hamey of the Phillies.
  • Other first round results included Oklahoma State beating Springfield 5-1, Northern Colorado upset Southern California, 2-1, and Western Michigan upset Arizona 4-1.
  • Every first round game featured a lefthanded pitcher facing a righthanded pitcher.  And every hurler tossed a complete game.  Not a single reliever was used.
  • The schedule for June 11 has Colgate vs. Southern California in an elimination game, Wake Forest vs. Northern Colorado in the winner's bracket, Western Michigan vs. Oklahoma State in a winner's bracket contest and Arizona and Springfield will meet in an elimination game.
