Western Michigan 9, Wake 0
OMAHA, Neb. – Wake Forest finds itself with its back against the wall after suffering its first loss in the College World Series. Western Michigan beat the Deacons 3-0 on June 13 at Omaha Municipal Stadium. Western Michigan is the lone 3-0 team in the tournament while Wake Forest, Arizona and Oklahoma State are all 2-1.
Wake Forest's defense, which had been stellar throughout the NCAA Tournament, did not come through against the Broncos. The Broncos scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and six unearned runs in the third to hand the Deacons their first loss in the series and first shutout in 32 games. Wake Forest was held to just three hits by two Western Michigan hurlers.
Buck Fichter started for the Deacons before being relieved by John Stokoe in the fourth. Ralph Adams hurled hitless ball for the last two innings.
Wake Forest will get another shot at Western Michigan on June 14 at 9 o'clock in what will be an elimination game for the Deacons. One more loss would send the team back to Wake Forest. Coach Taylor Sanford will start sophomore righthander Jack McGinley in an effort to stop the Broncos. McGinley has a 6-2 record and has won three straight NCAA playoff games.
Arizona and Oklahoma State will meet with the winner meeting the winner of the Wake Forest-Western Michigan game on June 14.
Notes:
The Durham Sun reported on June 13 that the Wake Forest College baseball team is receiving wide criticism for playing a game on Sunday. According to the paper, President Dr. Harold Tribble was contacted in Winston-Salem where he had been attending the Bowman Gray School of Medicine's graduate ceremony. "If I had known about this Sunday game, I would never have given my permission for it to be played," said Tribble. According to the Durham Sun, "It's against the principles of the Baptist school for its students to engage in competitive athletics on the Sabbath." The Rev. Dennis Hockaday, the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Durham, was quoted as having sent a telegram to Dr. Tribble "saying that 'forfeit of the game is preferable to forfeit of the principles of Christianity.'"
