Wake 10, Western Michigan 7
OMAHA, Neb. – Wake Forest handed Western Michigan its first defeat in the College World Series and kept itself in contention for the national championship with a 10-7 win over the Broncos on June 14 at Omaha Municipal Stadium.
Relief pitcher Bill Walsh came out of the bullpen to halt a WMU rally in the eighth inning and helped the Deacons earn the win.
The Deacons led 10-1 and seemed in control with starter Jack McGinley on the mound. But McGinley gave up a single to start the eighth and walked the next two batters to load the bases. Western Michigan's Fred Messner then unloaded a grand slam and the Deacons' lead was trimmed to 10-5.
McGinley walked the next hitter before head coach Taylor Sanford brought in Ralph Adams. Adams allowed two more runs on a pair of singles, a wild pitch and a hit batter. Sanford then made the move to bring in Walsh with two men on. After a ground out to Bill Barnes at third, Walsh issued a walk to load the bases. The Deacons then retired the next two Broncos on infield outs.
Wake Forest jumped on top after two scoreless innings with a seven run third. The Deacons sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame and collected seven hits. First baseman Bob Waggoner started the inning with a single down the first base line. Pitcher Jack McGinley added a single before shortstop Harold Moore sacrificed the runners to second and third. Centerfielder Luther McKeel singled home Waggoner and McGinley scored on George's Miller's single. Western Michigan replaced starter pitcher Roger Eggers with Gene Frechette.
Catcher Linwood Holt immediately singled off Frechette to drive in McKeel before Frank McRae walked to load the bases. Barnes drove in all three runs with a triple. Barnes then stole home for the Deacs' seventh run of the inning.
The Deacons added a run in the fifth when second baseman Jack Bryant doubled, move to third on a single by Waggoner, then stole home.
The Deacs went up 10-1 with two runs in the eighth. Bryant hit his third consecutive double to drive home Holt who had singled, and McRae who had reached on a walk.
Western Michigan's lone run to that point had come in the fifth when McGinley gave up two singles and two walks.
There are three teams remaining in the CWS as Wake Forest, Western Michigan and Oklahoma State are all 3-1.
The Deacons will face Oklahoma State at 9 o'clock on June 15 in an elimination game. Sanford has named sophomore lefty John Stokoe to start vs. the Aggies (now Cowboys). OSU's Ken Kinnamon, with a 10-1 record, will start for the Aggies. Oklahoma State advanced yesterday with a 12-inning 5-4 win over Arizona that sent the Wildcats home to Tucson.
