Wake Forest 4, Rollins 0
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Jack McGinley continued his postseason hot streak as he threw a shutout and Wake Forest took the lead in the best-of-three series with Rollins College after today's 4-0 win.
McGinley walked two and struck out two while allowing seven hits. Rollins starter Art Brophy fanned four and walked seven.
The Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the third. Shortstop Harold Moore grounded out to start the inning but Luther McKeel was hit by a pitch. Catcher Linwood Holt lined a single off the wall and rightfielder Al Fantuzzi threw the ball into second. Shortstop Nick Vancho then threw to home to keep McKeel from advancing but the throw sailed 20 feet over the catcher's head, allowing McKeel to score standing up.
The Deacons added a single run in the seventh when Holt walked and stole second. Frank McRae then singled to left to score Holt.
McGinley was masterful in pitching out of jams. In five different innings, Rollins put its lead-off hitter into scoring position with one out but McGinley was able to strand them all.
Wake Forest added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Holt walked and feigned a steal of second as Tommy Cole squared around to bunt. On the next pitch, Cole hit a 352-foot homer to left-center, the deepest part of Harper-Shepherd Field.
Wake Forest's defense was outstanding. In the first, McKeel saved a run with a diving catch of a blooper by Connie Butler. Third baseman Bill Barnes made a diving stab to snuff another potential Tar rally in the fifth. With two outs in the ninth, Rollins' catcher Don Finnigan lined a 1-2 pitch between third and short but Barnes made a brilliant diving catch for the final out.
Rollins' first baseman Bob MacHardy had quite a day. After graduating in the morning, he was married in the early afternoon and found himself in the Tars' starting line-up for the 3:30 game.
Holt and shortstop Harold Moore each had a pair of hits for the Deacons.
The two teams will meet again on June 4 at 3:30 at Harper-Shepherd Field. Wake Forest will send Lefty Davis to the mound to face Rollins' Bill Cary. A third game, if necessary, will be played on Sunday, June 5 if Deacon head coach "Taylor Sanford can get permission from college officials to let his club play on Sunday. If this official O.K. is not received the third game will be played Monday," wrote Fred Dixon of the Raleigh News and Observer.
