WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest cross country and track and field assistant coach Ashley Bastron has been selected to serve as a coaching mentor in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Female Coaches Mentorship Program.
"It's an honor to again be selected as a mentor for the USTFCCCA Female Coaches Mentorship program," said Bastron. "I've been fortunate to have great female coaching mentors in this sport, including Karen Harvey and Rhonda Riley, and I believe it's important to give back to the community that's given me so much. I want to empower female coaches to use their talents and voices to lead their programs and accomplish their goals. Coaching at the collegiate level is a privilege and I'm thankful I have the opportunity to do what I love every day. I hope to see a rise in female coaches at the collegiate level and I'm confident this program helps to make that happen. I've learned a lot from my mentees over the last two years and I look forward to continuing to build new relationships this year."
The program is designed to increase the representation, depth of knowledge and advancement of female coaches in the field of NCAA cross country and track and field coaching in positions at every level: volunteer, paid-assistant, paid-part-time assistant, paid-full-time assistant, paid-head coach at divisions I, II, III, NAIA and female coaches who continue to coach post-collegiate athletes as well as create accessibility to female leaders within the industry.
Mentees in the program experience direct benefits of mentorship and career guidance within a space allowing room for holistic self-reflection in an emotionally-supported environment.
"Ashley's selection as a mentor confirms what I have thought about her since she came aboard our staff," said head coach John Hayes. "She has done a terrific job and I am incredibly proud of her being selected as a Female Coaching Mentor. Ashley has the character and leadership ability that is necessary to guide our student-athletes and prepare them for life after college. She is a great asset to our program."
