Deacs Edged by Duke in Overtime, 4-3

9/10/2020 11:16:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Carrie McIntire had a goal and assist in her collegiate debut.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest dropped a back-and-forth season-opening game to Duke in overtime, 4-3, at Spry Stadium on Thursday night. The game was a non-conference tune-up before the ACC slate begins next week.

The Demon Deacons (0-1) scored twice in a minute midway through the second half to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

But the Blue Devils (1-0) responded, with Marykate McGuire tying the game in the 88th minute and winning it in the 96th minute.

"We're not really happy about this one after being in front with two minutes to go and losing to a really good Duke team," head coach Tony da Luz said. "At the same time, most teams are sitting at home and we're grateful for the opportunity to play. We did a lot of good things and I'm encouraged by our young players as we went from being an experienced team to a youthful team in a hurry. Still, there are some things we need to fix in a hurry."

Wake Forest started five freshmen: goalkeeper Madison Howard, forward Carrie McIntire, midfielder Faith Adams and defenders Sophie Faircloth and Breckyn Monteith. McIntire led the way for the offense with a goal and assist, including scoring the equalizer in the 60th minute and assisting on the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute.

Ryanne Brown tallied Wake Forest's first goal of the night in the 38th minute, knotting the score at 1-1 after assists from Sofia Rossi and Mia Albery.

Lauren Tangney found McIntire open behind the defense, and McIntire beat Duke's keeper 1v1 to make the score 2-2.

McIntire then found Rossi for the Deacons' final goal, as Rossi tapped it into the back of the net.

For Duke, McGuire scored the final two goals of the game to cap off a 10-shot night for her.

Wake Forest split time in goal between three different keepers, as Howard, Mia Raben and Kaitlyn Parks all made at least one save and let up at least a goal each.

Wake Forest will open its ACC schedule on Thursday night, traveling to take on North Carolina.
