The Demon Deacons hosted the Panthers in an exhibition tune-up on Sunday evening at Spry Stadium.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Freshman Chase Oliver's second goal of a brace was the game winner for Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons on Sunday night defeated Pitt 3-2 in an exhibition at Spry Stadium.
The Deacs got a pair of goals late in the first half from two different freshmen, as Omar Hernandez connected with Garrison Tubbs off a free kick in the 40th minute. Then, more than a minute later, Oliver struck as he took advantage of an aggressive attack to score.
Despite the two-goal lead at halftime, Pitt fought back with a pair of goals of corner kicks in the 65th and 73rd minutes before Oliver's winner.
Wake Forest now turns its attention to the regular season with a marquee matchup against Clemson this upcoming Friday night at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. The opening match for ACC Men's Soccer will pit the predicted one-two finishes in the South Region. Additionally, Clemson (five) and Wake Forest (four) received the most votes in the conference as overall champions.
The Deacs have won the last five matchups between the two teams dating back to the 2016 season.
Friday's match will be televised on the ACC Network.
