PINEHURST, N.C. – Wake Forest men's golfers Alex Fitzpatrick (Jr.), Fulton Smith (So.), Michael Brennan (Fr.) and B.J. Rogillio (Fr.) all finished inside the top 11 at the Pinehurst GCAA Amateur.
With the cancelation of fall golf in the ACC, the Wake Forest men's team has found other ways to stay competitive. Along with weekly intra-squad match play, the student athletes find themselves playing in tournaments that maybe didn't exist before.
The ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, Ivy League, and others all cancelled fall golf this year due to COVID-19. With those cancelations, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) have been working on amateur tournaments for collegiate players to still compete.
This weekend the GCAA hosted the Pinehurst GCAA Amateur as a part of the GCAA Amateur series. The series is made up of tournaments around the country from August to November for all 2020-21 college eligible student-athletes and amateurs. The tournaments are recognized by the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). The field consisted of 61 players and Wake Forest had all four of its participants finish inside the top 12.
Sophomore Fulton Smith led the way, finishing tied for second three strokes off the lead. Nine birdies in his final round gave him the second lowest of the day, carding a six-under 66. Junior Alex Fitzpatrick finished four strokes behind Smith in a tie for fifth after shooting two-under in his final two rounds. Freshman Michael Brennan finished alongside Fitzpatrick in a tie for fifth.
Freshman B.J. Rogillio also had a strong finish, coming in tied for eleventh after shooting his tournament-low 69 in the final round to put him up 17 spots on the leaderboard.
"We love seeing the guys get out there and compete any way they can," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Without team competitions they have really stepped up in putting themselves out there to continue to improve. They're athletes, they want to compete, and they want to win. There's only so much we can do at the facility so we're very happy to see them getting to events like this. The road to get there might look a little different this year, but our goal at the NCAA Championships in the spring remains the same. Go Deacs!"
