Demon Deacons Earn Key Conference Win Over NC State, 1-0

10/21/2021 9:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Giovanna DeMarco’s first goal of the season guides Wake Forest over NC State.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Giovanna DeMarco's first goal of the season pushed Wake Forest (13-3-0, 5-3-0 ACC) past NC State (7-7-2, 3-5-0 ACC) to help pick up a crucial victory on Thursday night at Spry Stadium.

The Demon Deacons opened the scoring through Giovanna DeMarco in the 38th minute as Sofia Rossi blew by a defender before dishing it to DeMarco. The Gwynedd Valley, Pa. native turned with the ball and hit a powerful shot toward the bottom corner. The shot was too much for the NC State goalkeeper to handle and the ball trickled over the goal line.

The Deacs went into the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage, having put up ten shots in the first half compared to NC State's four.

Wake Forest remained on the attack throughout the second half, dominating the offensive front with eight second half shots compared to the Wolfpack's two.

Kaitlyn Parks collected her eighth shutout as the Demon Deacon defense held the Wolfpack to six total shots with two on frame.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"From the get-go, we were ready. We were dialed in and focused. The women were focused on the game plan and they executed. We made sure to minimize the impact of their good players and I thought we did a good job of that. I thought the ball movement was fantastic, everything was challenging and the passing was really good. I thought we did a good job of keeping the ball and being patient, which is what we wanted. I'm really happy for this group of seniors. They are fantastic people and they deserved this win."
