Demon Deacons Drop 3-2 Decision To Boston College

10/23/2021 9:34:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Despite two second half goals, Wake Forest was unable to defeat Boston College as the Demon Deacons fell by a score of 3-2.

NEWTON, Mass. -- Wake Forest men's soccer (9-5-1, 3-3-1) dropped a 3-2 decision to Boston College (6-5-2, 2-3-2) on Saturday night at Newton Soccer Complex.

The Demon Deacons trailed at the halftime break by a score of 2-0, as the Eagles would strike in the 19th and 43rd minutes. Wake Forest would get a goal back in the 62nd minute, as senior Kyle Holcomb found the back of the net for the 28th time in his career.

Boston College responded, though, just four minutes later to push its lead to 3-1. Redshirt junior Jake Swallen scored on a penalty kick in the 87th minute to get Wake Forest back within one, but the Demon Deacons did not get an equalizer before time ran out.

Wake Forest will close out the regular season on Friday night at Spry Stadium, hosting Syracuse for a 7 p.m. start.

How It Happened

  • Freshman Ryan Fessler had Wake Forest's first shot of the night in the eighth minute, but his attempt just missed the Boston College net.

  • Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as Mike Suski received a pass off an Eagle throw-in to beat Wake Forest's defensive line. It was the first time Wake Forest trailed in a match since Oct. 1 against Clemson.

  • Wake Forest had two free kick tries from outside the 18-yard box in the 24th and 29th minutes, but neither attempt was converted into an equalizer. Junior Omar Hernandez took the attempt in the 29th minute, one that would hit the top of the crossbar.

  • The Eagles would take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break, as Boston College earned a penalty kick in the 43rd minute that would be converted.

  • Freshman Trace Alphin was tested in the early seconds of the second frame, but the Eagles were stopped.

  • Wake Forest would get its first goal of the night from senior Kyle Holcomb, who buried a pass from freshman Roald Mitchell in the 62nd minute. The goal was the 28th of Holcomb's career, moving him into a tie with Raimo de Vries (1989-92) for the ninth-most career goals in program history.

  • Boston College ultimately would take back a two-goal lead just four minutes later as Suski got a second goal for a brace. The goal would prove to be the game-winning strike.

  • Mitchell nearly had a Wake Forest goal in the 75th minute, but his shot hit off both goal posts.

  • Wake Forest did get a second goal late, as redshirt junior Jake Swallen converted on a penalty kick attempt for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Demon Deacon Details of Note

Muuss' Musings
"We are extremely disappointed with the result. We just didn't do a good enough job with attention to details and keeping them wide, and they made us pay the price. I am proud of the way they fought to the very end. We have to now focus on a huge match at home on Friday night versus a very tough Syracuse team."

Up Next
Wake Forest will conclude the regular season on Friday night, hosting Syracuse in the final ACC match of the regular season. The team will honor seniors Kyle Holcomb and Holland Rula prior to the start of the contest.
