Wake Forest Travels to No. 22 Notre Dame for Regular Season Finale

The Demon Deacons and Fighting Irish have split the last four matchups as Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 8-2-1.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Wake Forest women's soccer concludes its regular season schedule on Thursday when it travels to No. 22 Notre Dame at Alumni Stadium for a 7 p.m. matchup that will be broadcast on ACCNX.
 
With the 2021 ACC Tournament only featuring the top-six teams, in what is a loaded conference, every remaining game is pivotal. At 6-3-0, the Deacs sit in fourth place with a big matchup at No. 22 Notre Dame on Thursday. The Fighting Irish are in fifth with a 6-3-0 league record.
 
No. 2 Virginia (8-0-1) and No. 1 Florida State (7-1-1) occupy the top two spots as No. 6 Duke (6-2-1) is in third place with No. RV Clemson and No. 7 North Carolina are vying for a spot at 5-3-1 and 4-2-3.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Shayla Smart delivered her sixth game-winning goal to give the Wake Forest women's soccer team the 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Pitt on Sunday.
 
Smart gave the Deacs the lead six minutes into the second half as Hulda Arnarsdottir sent a shot at the net and it bounced off the crossbar. Senior Shayla Smart followed up the shot and finished into an empty net. It was her sixth game-winning goal and 10th goal of the season.
 
Out of the break, the Deacs earned two penalty kicks within the first six minutes of the second half. Hulda Arnarsdottir was fouled in the Pitt box, gaining a penalty kick and converting it for the Wake Forest equalizer.
 
FIRST HALF TEAM
Wake Forest is outscoring opponents 23-4 in the first half and has scored 10 goals during the first 15 minutes of regulation.
 
SMART IS CLUTCH
The Demon Deacons are coming off a thrilling 2-1 victory over Pitt on Sunday, Oct. 24. Smart netted the game-winning goal for the sixth time this season. Smart is tied for the most game-winning goals in the nation.
 
PROTECTING THE NET
The Deacs have recorded 10 shutouts this season, the most since 2017 when they managed 12. Through 17 games, the back line has limited opponents to a combined 10 goals and 63 shots on goal. Wake Forest ranks 16th in the nation in goals-against average at .581.
 
EVERYONE IS DANGEROUS
Twelve different Deacs have scored at least one goal this season, and six of Deac's 12 goal scorers have scored two or more goals.
 
GOOD SIGNS
Wake Forest is 13-0 when scoring the first goal and 12-0 when outshooting their opponents. When the Deacs score two or more goals they are a perfect 11-0. 
 
FINDING THE NET
Through 17 games, Wake Forest has scored 36 goals, surpassing the total number of goals scored by Wake Forest over 14 games during the 2020-21 season (16).
 
RPI UPDATE
Wake Forest's RPI (rating percentage index) sits at No. 30, as it is one of eight ACC teams ranked among the top 30 of the latest NCAA RPI.
 
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame holds the No. 22 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches poll this season and brings a 12-4-1 record into Thursday's match.
 
The Fighting Irish have lost three-straight against top 10 teams -- 2-1 to No. 2 Virginia, 1-0 (OT) to No. 6 Duke and 2-1 (2OT) to No. 7 North Carolina. 
 
Sammi Fisher is tied for fourth in the ACC with 10 goals this season while her 25 points are tied for third in the conference. The Simi Valley, California native has four game-winning goals this season.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Demon Deacons trail the all-time series, 2-8-1, as the teams have split the last four meetings.
 
Wake Forest defeated Notre Dame in the spring of 2021, when Shayla Smart picked up her first collegiate start and first collegiate game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Alumni Stadium.
 
Wake Forest is 2-3-1 all-time at Notre Dame.
 
UP NEXT
Six teams will qualify for this year's ACC Championship. The first round is set for Oct. 31 with the No. 1 and 2 seeded teams earning byes, while the No. 3 seeded team plays host to No. 6, and the No. 4 team plays host to No. 5. 
 
The winners will then advance to Cary for the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 5, followed by the title game on Nov. 7.
