SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Wake Forest men placed third in the men's field Friday morning as the women rounded out at 11th at the Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Championships at Notre Dame Burke Golf Course.
The Wake Forest men were third overall, with both junior Zach Facioni (sixth) and redshirt junior Aaron Las Heras (19th) earning All-ACC honors and led the Deacs to a total score of 104 points. The women were led by Carolien Millenaar (41st) and Hana Castimanes (55th) for an 11th-place finish with a total of 268 points.
Facioni's honor makes it third All-ACC award for the Wake Forest men, posting a 23:44.9 mark that had him in the front pack for most of the race. Las Heras picked up his first cross country All-ACC honor as a Demon Deacon.
Racing first on a wet, chilly morning in South Bend, the Wake Forest men finished third overall falling behind Syracuse and Notre Dame. Six Wake Forest finishers were within the top 40 runners in the field of 135.
The women's race followed, with Wake Forest 11th ahead of Pitt, Louisville, Miami and Clemson
JOHN HAYES QUOTE
"Today was not a great day but we had a lot of athletes learn about racing, toughness and teamwork. Both the men and the women have to be better at the region championships. We know that. They are a great group of kids that I fully believe will react in a positive and inspired way to the results of today.
They ran tough today - not great tactically but tough. We faded the last 2k and we cannot in 2 weeks. The final result was a bit disappointing. The very positive about this is that we were not in a great place two weeks ago. Our athletic department was incredibly helpful from academics to sports medicine. We look forward to the southeast region meet in 2 weeks. We know what we have to do. We just need to execute."
ASHLEY BASTRON QUOTE
"It wasn't our day and I'm not going to make any excuses. We didn't execute the race as well as other teams did and that's on us to own. This race didn't show what we are capable of, but we have the opportunity to race again in two weeks at our full potential. Now it's time to get back to work."
