Demon Deacons Overcome Hurricanes in 2-1 Double Overtime Victory

10/7/2021 8:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Wake Forest stays perfect at home against Miami, improving to a 10-0 record over the Hurricanes.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest women's soccer garnished a rainy double overtime victory against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe Miami on Thursday night at Spry Stadium.

The Demon Deacons journeyed for its second overtime finish in a row. 30 seconds into the second overtime senior Sofia Rossi netted the game-winning goal coming from a Ryanne Brown cross. Rossi's goal was her fourth of the season and the assist from Brown was her third.

Wake Forest outshot Miami 22-11 throughout the match. Senior goalkeeper Mia Raben made her first start of the season on her senior night and made three saves, enroute to her first win in the net since October 10, 2020. Freshman Kristin Johnson and junior Lyndon Wood both went the full 101 minutes for the Deacs.

The Deacs opened the scoring within the opening two minutes of the game, which is 10th fastest goal in program history. Graduate student Jenna Menta found her fifth goal of the season when she carried the ball from within the Deacs half. Menta boosted past three defenders before finding the left side of the net.

Despite the Demon Deacons outshooting the Hurricanes, 19-10, Miami found an equalizer with 1:59 left to play in the match to send the game to overtime.

The Deacs and Cans came up empty in the first overtime. The Deacs created two separate shots in the final minute but none fell through.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"We played a tough team. Miami is super hungry and they deserved to send it to overtime as we wasted our chances. I thought the first 10-minute overtime we got the game back and played well. We wanted to carry that over to the second overtime period, where we pulled out the golden goal victory."
