Wake Forest Hosts Harvard for NCAA Tournament First Round

The Demon Deacons have hosted 16 NCAA tournament games, and the Deacs are 13-2-1 in Winston-Salem early-round NCAA games.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest women's soccer will open the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship at home, hosting Harvard on Sunday in a 1 p.m. ET match streamed on ACC Network Plus. 

The Deacs enter the NCAA Tournament fresh off an ACC Tournament Semifinal appearance and with an 15-5-0 record overall, having already had the most wins since 2011 (18). Wake Forest was ranked in the top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches poll last week and currently is sitting with 43 votes.

Harvard (12-2-1) gained its first at-large bid into the tournament since 2004. Harvard finished third in the Ivy league behind No. 16 Brown and #RV Princeton. 

TICKETS
Tickets are on sale now for reserved chairback seats at midfield for $15.00 (all ages), bleacher general admission seats are $8 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under, and seats on Walt Chyzowych Alumni Hill are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. 

The first 100 students who claim tickets via their Screamin' Demon Rewards app will be admitted free, while all other students will be admitted for only $5 by presenting their Deacon OneCard at the Spry Stadium ticket offices.

WAKE FOREST'S NCAA HISTORY
Wake Forest will be making its 21st overall NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Demon Deacons hold a 21-19-1 record in the tournament and has reached the College Cup in 2011 and the Sweet Sixteen four times. Katie Stengel is Wake Forest's all-time points leader in the NCAA championships, tallying 20 points in her career (2010-2012).

HOSTING HISTORY
Wake Forest has hosted 16 NCAA tournament games, and the Deacs are 13-2-1 in Winston-Salem early-round NCAA games.

TOURNAMENT-TIME MENTA
Graduate senior Jenna Menta scored the first goal and forced a game-winning own goal in the ACC quarterfinal upset over then-No. 2 Duke and picked up the assist in the semifinal game vs No. 1 Florida State. She has 19 points on six goals and seven assists. 

PROTECTING THE NET
The Deacs have recorded 11 shutouts this season, the most since 2017 when they managed 12. Through 20 games, the back line has limited opponents to a combined 15 goals and 74 shots on goal. Wake Forest ranked 31st in the nation in goals-against average at .740.

LAST TIME OUT
The Demon Deacons lost a heartbreaker to No. 2 Florida State, 2-1 (OT), in the ACC Championships semifinals after upsetting then-No. 2 Duke in the First Round of the ACC Tournament. 

ALL-ACC DEACS
Two Demon Deacons garnered ACC honors. Senior Shayla Smart earned Third Team All-ACC honors while freshman Nikayla Small landed on the ACC All-Freshman Team. It is the 20th time Wake Forest has earned two or more All-ACC accolades. 

FIRST HALF TEAM
Wake Forest is outscoring opponents 25-6 in the first half and has scored 10 goals during the first 15 minutes of regulation.

EVERYONE IS DANGEROUS
Twelve different Deacs have scored at least one goal this season, and six of Deac's 12 goal scorers have scored two or more goals.

GOOD SIGNS
Wake Forest is 14-1 when scoring the first goal and 13-1 when outshooting their opponents. When the Deacs score two or more goals they are a perfect 12-0.

FINDING THE NET
Through 20 games, Wake Forest has scored 40 goals which is the most goals a Wake Forest team has scored since 2011 (52).

RPI UPDATE
Wake Forest's RPI (rating percentage index) sits at No. 27, as it is one of seven ACC teams ranked among the top 30 of the latest NCAA RPI.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard is set to make its 17th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship and first since 2016. 

Junior Angela Caloia ranks second in the Ivy League in goals (10) and game-winning goals (four) while ranking third in points (22) on the season. Three times this season she has posted two goals in a game. For her career, she has 16 goals, 45 points, and six game winners in 31 games played.

SERIES HISTORY
The Deacs and the Crimson will meet for the first time in program history.

UP NEXT
The winner of the Harvard-Wake Forest matchup will advance to the NCAA second round on Friday, Nov. 19 and will face the winner of No. 2 seed Michigan and Bowling Green.
