Demon Deacons Travel to No. 9 Michigan for NCAA Tournament Second Round

Wake Forest holds a 2-0-1 record in the all-time series with the Michigan Wolverines.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest women's soccer team continues NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship play this weekend, traveling to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the second and third rounds of the tournament at U-M Soccer Stadium. Wake Forest will face the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines in a second-round matchup Friday evening, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE
Tennessee (19-2) and Washington State (14-2-4) open play at 2 p.m. on Friday, with Michigan (16-3-3) and Wake Forest to follow at 5 p.m. The winners will play each other in Sunday's third-round game at 1 p.m.

FIRST ROUND WRAP UP
The Wake Forest soccer team recorded their 12th shutout as they downed Ivy League foe Harvard in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons improved to 21-19-1 record in the tournament and moved to 14-2-1 in Winston-Salem early-round NCAA games.

WAKE FOREST'S NCAA HISTORY
Wake Forest will be making its 21st overall NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Demon Deacons hold a 22-19-1 record in the tournament and have reached the 2011 College Cup and made it to the the Sweet Sixteen five times (1999, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2018). Katie Stengel is Wake Forest's all-time points leader in the NCAA championships, tallying 20 points in her career (2010-2012).

TOURNAMENT-TIME MENTA
Graduate senior Jenna Menta scored the first goal and forced a game-winning own goal in the ACC quarterfinal upset over then-No. 2 Duke and picked up the assist in the semifinal game vs No. 1 Florida State. She has 19 points on six goals and seven assists. 

PROTECTING THE NET
The Deacs have recorded 12 shutouts this season, tying for the most since 2017 when they managed 12. Through 21 games, the back line has limited opponents to a combined 15 goals and 76 shots on goal. Wake Forest ranked 27th in the nation in goals-against average at .705.

ALL-ACC DEACS
Two Demon Deacons garnered ACC honors. Senior Shayla Smart earned Third Team All-ACC honors while freshman Nikayla Small landed on the ACC All-Freshman Team. It is the 20th time Wake Forest has earned two or more All-ACC accolades. 

FIRST HALF TEAM
Wake Forest is outscoring opponents 26-6 in the first half and has scored 11 goals during the first 15 minutes of regulation.

EVERYONE IS DANGEROUS
Twelve different Deacs have scored at least one goal this season, and six of Deac's 13 goal scorers have scored two or more goals.
 
GOOD SIGNS
Wake Forest is 15-1 when scoring the first goal and 14-1 when outshooting their opponents. When the Deacs score two or more goals they are a perfect 13-0.

FINDING THE NET
Through 21 games, Wake Forest has scored 43 goals which is the most goals a Wake Forest team has scored since 2011 (52).

SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
Michigan defeated No. 5 Rutgers 2-1 to earn the 2021 Big Ten Tournament Championship -- the program's third and first since 1999. 

Seniors Raleigh Loughman and Alia Martin were named first team All-Big Ten to lead a group of six Wolverines to earn conference honors during the regular season. 
 
Michigan scored three goals to defeat Bowling Green 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, improving to 12-1 in NCAA Tournament matches contested in Ann Arbor, and 10-1-1 on the season at U-M Soccer Stadium.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Friday's match will be the fourth meeting between Wake Forest and Michigan, as the Deacs hold a 2-0-1 in the all-time series. The programs last met on Aug. 30, 2018 at Spry Stadium where the Demon Deacons came out on top 4-0.
 
UP NEXT
The winner of the Michigan-Wake Forest matchup will advance to the NCAA third round on Sunday, Nov. 21 and will face the winner of No. 3 seed Tennessee and Washington State.
