CARY, N.C. -- The 25th-ranked Wake Forest soccer team (15-5) fell short in the ACC Semifinal to the No. 2nd-ranked Florida State (15-1-2) in a 2-1 overtime defeat at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday night.
Playing in their first ACC semifinal since 2012, the Demon Deacons opened the scoring through Sofia Rossi's eighth strike of the season. Jenna Menta held off two Seminole defenders before laying the ball off for Rossi to find the top right corner. It marked just the fifth time this season that FSU's opponent scored the game's first goal.
The Seminoles tied the game with a goal from Lauren Flynn, the second of the season for her and the second of her career. It all got set up after Yujie Zhao forced a corner kick and then served in a nice ball to the back post off the corner for her eighth assist of the season.
Through the first 45 minutes of play, the Deacs recorded four shots to the Seminoles two and put three on frame compared to Florida State's first.
The Seminoles outshot Wake Forest 6-2 in the second half but neither team could score as the Wake Forest headed to overtime for the third time this season.
Florida State would come away victorious as Maria Alagoa came through in the 97th minute with her fifth goal of the season.
Demon Deacon Details
"Congrat to Florida State. Even though they played a great game I thought our team played an awesome game. Tactically both teams were trying to get an edge here and there with whatever they could. I thought we got some good chances as we were organized pressing wise. If you don't press well against Florida State you will suffer. I think we played that team as well as they have been played all year. It is a shame we couldn't get to penalties and solve it that way. We had our chances and I am very proud of this team about the performances we have had down the stretch. I am looking forward to the NCAA tournament because if we perform like this consistently we are probably going to win some games."
