Deacons Drop Road Contest to Hokies

2/27/2021 7:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – Wake Forest fell to Virginia Tech by a final score of 84-46 on Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg.

Despite hitting 10 three-pointers for the seventh time this season, the Demon Deacons (6-13, 3-13) could not take down the Hokies (15-5, 9-5) in Blacksburg on Saturday.

Graduate guard Jonah Antonio's 12 points led Wake Forest in scoring. After shooting 4-for-9 from deep today, the Perth, Australia native has now knocked down at least four triples in six games this season.

How It Happened

  • Jonah Antonio's first triple of the afternoon put the Deacs on the scoreboard.

  • Carter Whitt's ninth three-pointer of the season ended a 9-0 Hokie run and cut the deficit to eight (14-6) with 13:10 to go in the opening period.

  • Antonio hit his second and third triples of the game in quick succession, and his second cut Virginia Tech's lead to 11 (26-15) with 8:37 left until halftime.

  • Wake Forest entered the intermission trailing Virginia Tech, 49-22.

    • Antonio led the Deacs in first half scoring, tallying nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.

  • Freshman guard Quadry Adams recorded his first points in ACC play off a jumper with 16:17 remaining in the game.

  • Antonio hit his fourth 3-pointer of the afternoon with 11:28 left to play.

  • The Deacs eventually fell to Virginia Tech, 84-46.

Stat of the Game

  • With four 3-pointers against Virginia Tech, Jonah Antonio has knocked down four or more triples in six games this season. The last Demon Deacon to accomplish this was Brandon Childress, who hit at least four triples six times in 2018-19.

    • Craig Dawson (2001-02), Justin Gray (2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06), and Coron Williams (2013-14) are the only other Deacs to have also accomplished this feat in the 21st century.

Straight From Forbes
"Virginia Tech came out today and imposed their will both mentally and physically on our team. That's a team that has a lot at stake, they're playing for the NCAA tournament, and they played like it. I thought they executed at a really high level. They played connected, they played really hard, they played for each other. I don't mean this in a bad way, they played violently. I don't mean that like they're violent people, they just played at a violent pace. We were behind the play pretty much from the get go. Right away they tried to establish Keve Aluma on the block and they did, and then he played inside out. He had five points against us the first time, had 23 today and 5-for-5 from three. So I thought they just played like a team that is playing for something important late in the season. They were locked in from the get go, and imposed their will on us from the opening tip."
