Deacs Drop Close Road Match to No. 5 Seminoles

2/28/2021 3:08:00 PM | Women's Tennis

Wake Forest picked up the doubles point while Anna Brylin captured a ranked win in the defeat to the Seminoles.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team nearly knocked off No. 5 Florida State on Sunday afternoon, falling, 4-3, in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Demon Deacons (4-5, 0-2 ACC) got off to a quick start in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. The pairing of junior Anna Brylin and freshman Brooke Killingsworth were the first to score a victory, defeating the pairing of FSU's Sallas and Hule, 6-4, in the No. 2 doubles match.

Moments later on court one, junior Carolyn Campana and senior Eliza Omirou combined to score a huge win over the top-10 Seminoles (9-1, 4-0 ACC) to clinch the doubles point for the Demon Deacons. The duo cruised en route to a 6-2 victory over the Florida State pair of Pairone and Allen.

Despite the early point, the Demon Deacons momentum did not continue moving into singles play. Cassie Wooten and Brooke Killingsworth dropped two early matches giving Florida State a 2-1 lead with four matches remaining.

After the Seminoles took the lead, No. 21 Carolyn Campana dropped a tough match to the No. 27 ranked Guilia Pairone to advance the Noles lead to 3-1 before No. 98 Eliza Omirou was outlasted to give Florida State a match-clinching win.

Although the Deacons lost the match, Anna Campana and Anna Brylin picked up two wins towards the end of the day to put the Old Gold and Black on the board in singles play for a final score of 4-3 Seminoles.

Brylin's win came over No. 106 Allen, picking up her first ranked win of the season.

Quotable

"This was a tough match to lose. We did such a great job to get the doubles point and didn't seem to have too much trouble with being outdoors for the first time this season and it being 80 degrees. It was tough to lose that first set tiebreaker in Eliza's match 17-15. Luckily, it is still just February. We're going to keep building on this heading into March." - Coach Wyshner
