Quartet of Demon Deacons Post Strong Pentathlon Performances at South Carolina Invite
2/5/2021 5:33:00 PM | Track and Field
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Redshirt junior Anna Bush and freshman Addison Berry, who finished fifth and sixth respectively in the pentathlon, highlighted Wake Forest's performances on day one of the South Carolina Invitational.
"It was great to get these ladies a mark ahead of the ACC Championships," Director of Track and Field John Hayes said. "I am very excited to see how they compete in a few weeks."
"The multi-events are always sure to be a roller coaster ride, and that's exactly how today was," Assistant Coach Gray Horn said. "The COVID hiatus has not done anybody any favors, and we are no different. We still have some inconsistencies to iron out, but I am proud of the way Anna Bush competed. We had a tough time finding our rhythm in the high jump today, and that really impacted our overall score. I'm certain that we can make small adjustments that will make a big difference in the next few weeks leading into ACC Indoors. Additionally, I am excited for the future of young Addison Berry. Her score today is very much above average for a freshman, and she continues to improve each week."
The Demon Deacons men's cross country team competed earlier today at Florida State, while the Wake Forest indoor track and field teams split its squad this weekend between the South Carolina Invite and tomorrow's Brant Tolsma Invite at Liberty.
Bush, who accumulated a total of 3,784 points on Friday, was well balanced across the board finishing no lower than seventh in any single event. However, the majority of her points came from her impressive third-place performance in the 60 meter hurdles (8.75 seconds) and fourth-place finishes in the 800m run (2:25.02) and high jump (1.62m).
Berry, who made her collegiate debut in the pentathlon, accumulated a total of 3,649 points. The Westminster, S.C. native exhibited great consistency as she matched her 60m hurdles time from two weeks ago at the Hokie Invitational (8.96 seconds), but narrowly surpassed her mark in the high jump with a leap of 1.62m. Additionally, her top performance occurred in the long jump as finished third with a mark of 5.64m.
Senior Kaitlyn Kirby and sophomore Meghan O'Malley made their season debuts on Friday. Kirby achieved multiple personal records with marks of 2:36.91 in the 800m dash and 1.50m in the high jump. Both athletes were able to surmount 3,000 points on the day, putting them in close range of their pentathlon personal records.
Complete results for the pentathlon are listed below.
On day two of the South Carolina Invite, three Wake Forest field athletes are set to compete. Saturday's competition will be broadcasted on SEC Network +, which can be found on ESPN.com/watch or on the ESPN app. There will be no broadcasters but there will be an audio feed from the public address announcer.
