Deacs Lead Wake Forest Invitational Field After 36 Holes

The Wake Forest men’s golf team heads into the final round of competition with an eight-shot lead on the field and the only team currently under par at Pinehurst No. 2.

Pinehurst, N.C. - With the help of three players inside of the top 10 on the individual leaderboard, the No. 2 Demon Deacon men's golf team takes an impressive eight-stroke lead into the final round of the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2.

The Deacs head into the final round on Tuesday as the only team currently under par. They were helped by a strong start to the day when they carded an opening round 281, which was six-strokes better than any other team on the course. They followed that up with an even more impressive 276 (-4), the second lowest team score on the day.

Freshman Michael Brennan continues his historic start to his collegiate career after winning in his last start at the Kiawah Invitational in mid-February while also finishing in the top five in all three events so far this spring. 

Brennan, the current front runner for the Phil Mickelson Award given to the top collegiate freshman in the country, heads into Tuesday with a one-stroke lead over the field with the help of the lowest second round in the field. He carded a near bogey-free second round 66 (-4) including five birdies. Brennan heads into Tuesday at 3-under par.

The Leesburg,Va. native currently is second in the field in birdies with nine to his name through 36 holes of play. Brennan entered this week as the No. 4 ranked golfer in the nation according to the latest Golfstat rankings.

Sitting just one stroke back of Brennan and also in contention for the individual crown is senior Eric Bae, who was helped by the lowest first round in the field. The Pinehurst, N.C. native turned in an opening round 68 (-2) while posting a second round 70 (E) to sit in a tie for second on the individual leaderboard.

Junior Alex Fitzpatrick joins his Demon Deacon teammates in the top 10, currently sitting in a tie for sixth at even par. With the help of a birdie on the par-four 18th, Fitzpatrick ended the day with a 69 (-1) to get back to even par for the tournament.
