Deacs Take Home First Title of 2021
2/16/2021 4:03:00 PM | Men's Golf
Head Coach Jerry Haas earns his 40th team title at the helm of the Demon Deacons.
Kiawah Island, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team is taking home the hardware for the first time this season and freshman Michael Brennan is taking home his first collegiate title.
Wake Forest took over the field from the jump, shooting a program record-breaking score of 21 under par in the opening round, the lowest 18-hole team score in relation to par in program history. They finished in similar fashion with their final team score of 37 under par. That score is good for a tie as the third-best team 54-hole team score in relation to par, matching the -37 score at the Nike Golf Collegiate in the fall of 2015.
Brennan started the tournament strong and finished even stronger, with an opening round score of 67 and firing off a field-low 65 on the final day. 19 birdies over his 54 holes and an eagle in his final round kept him in the chase every round.
Senior Eric Bae was the only other player to shoot a 65 at the event, carding his best round in the first, followed by a 68 and 72 to finish 11 under par. Bae fired off 15 birdies during the tournament, including a hot streak at the end of his first round for six birdies in a row on his final seven holes.
From the Coach
"What a great team win for our guys. I told somebody last week that we are an explosive bunch with a long way to go, but when we get it going we make a lot of birdies. That is exactly what we did this week." said head coach Jerry Haas. "Thank you to College of Charleston for hosting us. Yesterday was a very difficult day with a lot of weather but they did a great job. As a coach I am very fortunate to be in the position I'm in but I'm also very proud of this group for all the hard work they put in. They want to be the best team in the country and I believe that will happen. Go Deacs!"
