Roberts, Facioni Set School Records on Day 1 of Raleigh Relays

Sophomore Alexandra Roberts set a school record in the women’s javelin and junior Zach Facioni crossed the finish line with the top mark in program history in the men’s 1,500m run on the first day of competition in Raleigh.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Wake Forest began action as a full outdoor track and field team for the first time this spring on Thursday at the Raleigh Relays on the Paul H. Derr Track at NC State. On the first day of the competition, sophomore Alexandra Roberts set a school record in the women's javelin with a mark of 57.68 meters.
The Queensland, Australia native surpassed Jessica Merckle's mark from 2016 when she recorded a throw of 56.91m. Additionally in the women's event, redshirt senior Rachel Kern placed sixth with a throw of 45.56m.
On the men's side on day one, Wake Forest was led in the field by rookie Thomas Kitchell who recorded the third-best mark in Demon Deacon history in the shot put with a throw of 17.29m that placed him fifth. Additionally, freshman Mason Ellis and sophomore Connor Mathis recorded top-10 marks in program history with throws of 16.35m and 16.07m, respectively.
On the track, Wake Forest was led by junior Zach Facioni as he set a school record in the men's 1,500m run with a time of 3:41.14 to place fifth in the event. Facioni surpassed Rob Heppenstall's time of 3:41.57 from 2018.
Overall for the day, Wake Forest had 25 student-athletes compete and 12 record top-20 finishes. All results are listed below.
