Demon Deacons Run Ends in ACC Quarterfinals

4/23/2021 12:15:00 PM | Women's Tennis

During doubles play, No. 30 ranked Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth knocked off No. 3 nationally ranked Daavettila and Morra to give Wake Forest an early kickstart.

ROME, Ga. – The No. 32 Wake Forest women's tennis team was eliminated in the ACC Championship Quarterfinals, 4-0, by No. 1 North Carolina on Friday morning in Rome, Ga.

The Demon Deacons (11-12, 6-7 ACC) had a competitive start to the afternoon with an inspiring effort during the doubles portion. Facing the No. 3 ranked doubles team in the country in the Tar Heels' (24-0, 14-0 ACC) Daavettila and Morra, the Deacs' No. 30 ranked pair of Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth took control early and never looked back.

Brylin and Killingworth jumped out to a 5-1 lead in their match and at that point it looked as though the Demon Deacons could be on their way to winning the doubles point over the Tar Heels for the second time in the last three matches against the in-state rivals. They closed out their match at 6-3, tying the doubles matches at 1-1.

It all came down to the No. 3 doubles match featuring Anna Campana and Peyton Pesavento. The Wake Forest pair led 5-4 late in the match, but North Carolina came back to win the next three games to take the match and the doubles point away from the Deacs.

After the match had to be moved indoors due to rain, Wake Forest was unable to sustain its momentum coming out of doubles.

Peyton Pesavento earned a point with a straight-set singles victory the day prior against Syracuse. She continued her great play on court six on Friday. Pesavento grabbed the opening frame against the Tar Heels' Tran, 7-6, and was at 1-1 in the second set when the team match ended at 4-0.

Quotable

"We played pretty well. After losing last week to them and then having Carolyn out for today, I was really proud of how the team rose to the challenge rather than giving in to it. It was a great doubles win for Anya and Brooke that should get them in to NCAA's for doubles since they were on the bubble at No. 30, and the group really battled in the singles. We are excited to rest and recover and get ready for what will hopefully be NCAA's next!"
