Shayla Smart tallied only goal for Wake Forest in road loss.
ATHENS, Ga. -- A slow start proved costly as Wake Forest fell to Georgia, 4-1, at Turner Soccer Complex on Saturday morning. Shayla Smart tallied the only goal for the Demon Deacons which came in the second half of the match.
The Bulldogs (4-7-3, 2-3-3 SEC) scored three times in the first 45 minutes and one in the second half, including goals in the 12th, 22nd, 28th and 61st minute.
After conceding 13 shots in the opening half, Wake Forest cut that to four in the second half, though one found the back of the net in the 61st minute.
Smart earned the lone goal for the Deacs with an assist from Ryanne Brown in the 61st minute. Georgia quickly killed any spark given by the Wake Forest goal with their fourth goal after restart.
Kaitlyn Parks made six saves in goal in 77 minutes of play, and Mia Raben made one stop in 13 minutes at the net.
For Georgia, the goals were scored by Mollie Belisle (2), Haley Sorrell and Ashley Andersen. Daniella Murguia had a pair of assists.
Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"We did not compete well in any area in the first half. UGA was tougher, more aggressive and much more effective in the first half and punished us for our mistakes and negative play. We improved in the second half, playing with more physical commitment and effort. Our young players learned some lessons today about playing without intensity and emotion. We look forward to redeeming ourselves on Thursday vs BC at Spry."
