The Deacs will travel to Norfolk, Va. on Sept. 16, 2023 to complete their home-and-home series with the Monarchs.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- As Wake Forest Athletics prepares to welcome fans back to Truist Field for Opening Night 2021, the Demon Deacons are set to welcome Old Dominion in the team's season opener on September 3, 2021.

After the Deacs' trip to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion in the 2020 season was cancelled due to schedule changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wake Forest has rescheduled the return trip of the home-and-home series with the Monarchs for Sept. 16, 2023.

"Wake Forest and the entire Winston-Salem community is excited to welcome Old Dominion and their fans to Truist Field as we open the 2021 college football season on Friday, Sept. 3," director of athletics John Currie said. "Dating back to last fall and all the schedule changes we underwent due to the pandemic, I am grateful for Old Dominion Director of Athletics Wood Selig's partnership to enable our contest with ODU to move from 2020 to 2023. We look forward to heading to Virginia where many Demon Deacon alums are located bringing DEACTOWN to Norfolk!"

"Our student-athletes and staff are extremely excited to hit the field on Sept. 3 in front of Deacon Nation and the entire Winston-Salem community," head coach Dave Clawson said. "I am very impressed with Coach Ricky Rahne's success offensively during his time at Penn State and I have enjoyed all my interactions with him and his staff. Additionally, we look forward to traveling to Virginia where many former, current and future Demon Deacons players are from."

Sept. 3 will mark the first ever meeting between the Deacs and the Monarchs on the football field. The Old Dominion program will also be playing its first game since 2019, as the Monarchs did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Winston-Salem Comes Together

Wake Forest University's marching band — The Spirit of the Old Gold & Black — and Winston-Salem State University's Red Sea of Sound will once again unite on Opening Night at Truist Field to launch the college football season.

As part of Wake Forest Athletics goal to provide the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina, the duo performed together for the first time ever in 2019 before a capacity Opening Night crowd as Wake Forest earned an exciting 38-35 victory over Utah State on the way to an 8-5 season culminating in an appearance in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. The Red Sea of Sound marching band has received widespread recognition over the years for their excellence in performance, featuring thrilling, high energy drum majors, auxiliary cores and top-quality musical composition.
